This is a free study site for the RBT exam — the Registered Behavior Technician certification examination, administered by BACB. Everything on it is built around one unusual fact: BACB publishes the exact number of scored items in each of the six content areas of its Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), so the order you should study in is not a matter of opinion.
If you were hired first and certified second, and someone has handed you a date, start below. The twelve questions are a weighted slice of the full ninety-question set — three from Behavior Acquisition, two from Data Collection and Graphing, one from Behavior Assessment, and so on, in the proportions BACB itself publishes.

The RBT examination delivers 85 questions in 90 minutes. Seventy-five of them are scored, ten are unscored pilot items you cannot identify, and BACB publishes how those 75 scored items are divided.

Questions people ask before they start
Do I need a degree to become an RBT?
No. You must be at least 18 at application and hold at least a high-school level education or its equivalent, clear a criminal background check and an abuse-registry check, complete a 40-hour training that meets BACB's current requirements, and pass an initial competency assessment. No degree, and no prior experience in behavior analysis. The certification page walks the whole path.
How long does the whole thing take?
The parts with published limits: the 40-hour training must span no fewer than five days and no more than 180; the initial competency assessment happens after that training and no more than 90 days before you submit your application; and once the application is approved you have twelve months to sit the examination. BACB does not promise a processing time, so if an employer has given you a date, leave slack in front of it.
Is an RBT a license?
No. RBT is a certification issued by BACB, a private non-governmental nonprofit — not a state license and not a government credential. The distinction is not pedantry: calling yourself a “licensed behavior technician” misrepresents your credential, and public statements about your credential are something the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) addresses directly — read the standard itself on bacb.com. Whether your own state separately licenses or registers behavior technicians varies and changes; check your state board.
How often do I have to recertify?
Confirm your own cycle in your BACB portal account, because the answer depends on when you certified or last recertified and 2026 is the year it changed. The requirements BACB set for certification and recertification from 2026 onward run on a two-year cycle and add 12 professional development units per cycle; PDUs have to fall inside the cycle, and supervision hours and client-specific training do not count toward them. Any source that answers this question with one unqualified word is wrong for half its readers.
Where do the facts on this site come from?
The RBT Handbook, the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) and the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), all published by BACB on bacb.com. Where BACB does not publish something — the passing score, an overall pass rate — this site says so rather than filling the gap with a figure. The about page lists what this site refuses to publish and why.
Is this site connected to BACB?
No. This is an independent study resource: not affiliated with, endorsed by, approved by or sponsored by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, and no study resource can guarantee anyone a pass. Questions about BACB policy belong on bacb.com, and so does anything about your own file. There is no inbox here to receive a message: the contact page is a routing list, not a support desk.
