The RBT Initial Competency Assessment — and the renewal assessment you repeat later
The skills sign-off you complete before you apply — and the renewal assessment you repeat once you are certified.
The RBT competency assessment is a skills demonstration you complete with an assessor after your 40-hour training — it is not the RBT examination, it is not multiple choice, and there is no answer key for it to leak.
Two BACB documents carry this name, which is most of the confusion. The Initial Competency Assessment is the one you complete before you apply for certification; the current version is the one marked effective 1 January 2026. The Recertification Competency Assessment belongs to renewal, and it has its own packet — that half of the page is further down.
If you are short on time, two things on this page decide whether your application clears: the window your assessment has to fall inside and who is allowed to sign it. Getting either wrong sends the paperwork back. How long a session runs, how nervous you should be, and which PDF someone uploaded to a flashcard site are not worth your evening. Where the assessment sits in the sequence
The order is fixed and it is the part people get wrong, usually by front-loading the assessment or by letting it age out while other paperwork catches up.
Finish the 40-hour training first
The assessment comes after the training, not alongside it. The 2026 requirements also changed what the approval statement on a training certificate has to say, so check your certificate against the current handbook before you build a timeline on it — the certification page walks the eligibility route.
Complete the initial competency assessment
With an assessor, using the current BACB packet. This is where the 90-day clock starts, and it runs toward your application submission.
Submit the certification application
Through your BACB portal account. BACB posts current application processing updates on its own site; timelines move, so do not plan around a number you read on a blog.
Schedule and sit the examination
Once the application is approved you have twelve months to take the examination. That is a separate appointment, separate rules, and a separate kind of preparation.
Who is allowed to assess you
The handbook is blunt about one thing: your assessor may not be related to you, may not be your subordinate, and may not be someone you employ. That rule exists because the assessment is a sign-off, and a sign-off from someone who answers to you is worth nothing.

Where the documents actually live
BACB publishes the current packets as free PDFs. Get them from the source, not from a resale site.
How to prepare, and the answer keys that do not exist
People arrive at this looking for an answer key — a “competency assessment answers pdf”, a deck with the key already in it. There is no key. You are not selecting an option; you are demonstrating a task while someone qualified decides whether what you did counts. A leaked list of answers would be a list of the tasks — which BACB already publishes, for free, in the packet.
So preparation is rehearsal, not memorization. Work through the packet's tasks in the order it lists them, with someone who can correct you, and treat any task you can only describe rather than perform as unfinished. The vocabulary is shared with the exam blueprint: the 43 tasks in the RBT Task List are the same territory in plainer language.
The examination is the opposite problem — recognition under time pressure, against a written stem and four options. Rehearsing tasks will not train that, and answering questions will not train the assessment. Practice for the exam separately.

Renewal: the recertification competency assessment
Renewal is where 2026 changed the answer, and where most of what you will read online — including a fair amount of study material — is now out of date.
What changed
Before the 2026 change, RBT recertification ran on a one-year cycle, with a recertification competency assessment completed close to your expiration date. BACB's post-transition rules put RBTs on a two-year cycle and add 12 professional development units per cycle on top of the assessment.
Which set of rules applies to you depends on when you certified or last recertified. No website can tell you that, and your BACB portal account can — it holds your expiration date, and it is where the renewal application is submitted. Note that the portal replaced the older BACB gateway during 2026, so bookmarks and walkthroughs written before that point send you to the wrong door.
The PDU rules that actually bite
Twelve units across two years is not a demanding total. The rules around them are what catch people out, because they are unforgiving about timing:
- PDUs have to fall inside the cycle they count for.
- They cannot be carried over into the next cycle, so front-loading twenty of them buys you nothing later.
- They cannot be made up during reinstatement — if the cycle closes short, the shortfall does not become homework, it becomes a problem.

Timing and lapses
The recertification competency assessment has a window measured against your expiration date rather than a date you choose. Under the pre-2026 rules that window was 45 days; the packet that matches your cycle is what states yours, so check it there rather than inheriting a number from a forum post.
Letting certification lapse is not a paperwork inconvenience you can backfill. RBT is a certification from a private board, not a state license, and BACB sets its own reinstatement route with its own requirements — including the rule above that missed PDUs cannot be made up along the way. The current handbook is the only reliable description of that route.

Is the RBT competency assessment the same as the RBT exam?

Can I take the RBT competency assessment online?

Where do I get the competency assessment packet?
From BACB, free. There is an Initial Competency Assessment packet and a separate Recertification Competency Assessment packet, both published as PDFs on bacb.com. Anyone charging you for a copy is charging you for a free document.
What happens if I cannot demonstrate one of the tasks?
Nothing dramatic — it simply is not signed off yet. The assessment is judged task by task rather than as a single score, so an unmet task is a practice item, not a failure notice. How and when it can be re-attempted is governed by the packet and by your assessor.
Is RBT renewal still every year?
Not as a blanket answer. BACB moved RBTs to a two-year cycle with 12 professional development units per cycle, and which rules apply to you depends on when you certified or last recertified. Confirm your own dates and requirements in your BACB portal account.
What happens if my RBT certification expires?
It stops being current, and BACB's reinstatement requirements apply rather than the ordinary renewal ones — notably, PDUs missed during a cycle cannot be made up during reinstatement. RBT is a certification, not a state license, so the handbook rather than a state board is the document that governs this.
